Overview
Released in 2016, Battlefield 1 took the franchise back to the origins of modern warfare and in doing so created something truly special. The Western Front, the Italian Alps, the Arabian desert – every theatre is rendered with stunning artistry.
Multiplayer
The large-scale multiplayer that defines Battlefield is at its absolute best here. Operations mode tells the story of real WWI campaigns across multiple maps in a single match, creating emergent narratives that no scripted game can match.
Single Player
The War Stories campaign is an anthology of short, powerful tales from different perspectives of the war. Some vignettes – particularly the opening Prologue – are among the most affecting sequences in FPS history.
Atmosphere
Nothing else sounds and feels like Battlefield 1. Biplanes dogfighting overhead while cavalry charge across muddy fields while artillery falls and a tank lumbers forward – the chaos of WWI is captured perfectly.
Verdict
Battlefield 1 is the high watermark of the franchise and arguably of large-scale multiplayer FPS gaming. Years later it remains unmissable and the servers are still active. An essential experience.
